Likert Scales and Plots

I have to handle likert scale questionnaires. Anyone here has experience with that?

  1. from my understanding they are ordinal data, but in many publications they are treated as scales/nominal, e.g. 1 to 5, with means, t-values, correlation analysis. Any recommendations how you treat them and which analysis I should have a look to in Jasp
  2. I have seen that in the desxriptice analysis in jasp it's possible to make likert plots, but they cannot be used without severy post-processing or editing for example in powerpoint. Is there any possibility to change the settings or the r-code in R to make them look a bit better? E.g. change height of the bar, insert percentage values for all stacks, avoiding to cut off thr legend etc

Thank you a lot for your help

  • Hi Vinschger:

    1. Exactly. If you treat them as scale variables the analysis is much simpler. Otherwise you have to use ordinal analyses, which are less developed. Luckily people often analyze the mean across several Likert scales, which behaves more like a scale variable.
    2. Hopefully this will be possible in the future. Some of these issues would be easy to fix after exporting to Adobe or Powerpoint. Feel free to issue a request on our GitHub page! (see https://jasp-stats.org/feature-requests-bug-reports/)
