If you have that many images, it's best not to put them in the filepool. You can just put them in the folder that contains the experiment file, and OpenSesame will find them as well. This should reduce the performance issue, because that way OpenSesame doesn't have to save all the images along with the experiment.
Does that help at all?
Sorry to revive this but I am having a similar issue. I don't have many images but I have 12 different experimental lists that may be causing the problem. I need to make a few small adjustments but the program just keeps stopping working... I would be very happy for any sugggestions.
PS: At this point I can't work on the lists one by one and put them together after -which, honestly, took ages as well, because I need to adjust things for all of them together...
Hi @hulya ,
loopitems shouldn't by itself slow the program down. (Having many files in the file pool is a different matter, because the file pool is compressed during saving, and that can slow things down.)
Are you using the latest version of OpenSesame 3.3.3? If so, can you attach the experiment here (or a variation of the experiment that illustrates this sluggishness) so that I can take a look at what is happening?
Hi @sebastiaan ,
Thank you very much for your response.
Hi @sebastiaan ,
Sorry to ask here again. The previous issue is solved but I have a different question regarding the experiment's length:
We have an experiment for about 90 minutes, and we heard that sometimes after an hour or so it starts getting a little stuck and they need to wait a few secs before seeing the stimuli (it's a self-paced reading task, and they press space to see the next word in the sentence.). This is not recurring too much, but we were wondering if you would have any suggestions to make our participants' life easier or somehow make the experiment load faster. Maybe a break halfway through it would give it time to load better?
We are using OSWeb - JATOS. :)
Hi @hulya ,
I'm not sure where the delay comes from. If it's a reliably occurring issue, then it may be that something (I have no idea what) accumulates over time and eventually results in delays. @Daniel have you heard similar reports before?
In general, I would say that 90 minutes is too long for an online study though! I would be inclined to break a study like that up into multiple sessions that participants can run whenever they want. (But that's just a matter of preference, unrelated to technical issues.)
No I haven't! It may be due to the data in memory grows too large and the browser needs to do some memory management to keep it in within limits of what is allowed by a browser. OpenSesame also stores the data of each trial in an array on the client side next to sending it to the server. After 90 minutes of data collection I do see this body of data growing too large to efficiently handle.
That being said, I completely agree with Sebastiaan that you don't want to conduct 90 minute studies online. We always try to keep studies to a maximum of 20-30 minutes, as people will get bored at a point and perform the task less well. In a lab there always is the experimenter that can keep an eye on things, but when people are without supervision you cannot keep an eye on performance.
Thanks for your responses. I added a break between two blocks to maybe aid the accumulation to send it to the server, because this "being stuck" problem happens for a short time, and at least on my computer, once.
I know that it is too long - it is because we had initially prepared all for an EEG study but due to the situation not allowing us to collect data, we decided to go online. But yes, I am aware of the risks... If it will be a disaster, we will probably consider shortening it. Thank you for the suggestions and warnings :)
